Grounding For Healing

Updated: Apr 11

This morning, I found myself reflecting on some of the most powerful tools that have carried me through my healing, growth, and evolution. One of the biggest ones? Grounding.

Now, I’ll be honest, this one was not easy for me to master. In fact, I flat-out rejected it for a while. Why? Because I had convinced myself that grounding was only about going outside and standing in the grass… and well, let’s just say my mind had some questions. Like, what exactly is in that grass? And let’s talk about the time my neighbor’s adorable dog “Mr. Stitches” relieved himself in my yard. Would I just so happen to be led to “ground” in that exact spot? See what I mean? I was deep in my overthinking era.

But here’s the truth, once I checked myself, removed all the mental blocks (and there were many), I was able to truly embrace grounding and get all the way into it. And now? It’s one of the most sacred and helpful practices in my healing journey.

What is Grounding, Really?

Grounding is not just about standing in grass (though that can definitely be part of it). It’s the practice of rooting yourself in the present moment, anchoring into your body, calming your nervous system, and connecting to the energy of the earth. I like to think of it as a spiritual seatbelt that keeps you safe, steady, and aligned no matter what life throws your way. It’s the difference between spinning out in stress and standing firm in peace. It’s how you stay connected to yourself when the world feels noisy, heavy, or overwhelming. Grounding is a bridge between your higher self and your human experience.

Why Grounding Is Non-Negotiable for Healing

When you’re healing, your energy can feel like it’s everywhere, one part grieving, another part growing, another part wondering what’s next. Grounding brings it all home.

It helps you:

  • Regulate emotions without being ruled by them

  • Feel safe in your body again

  • Reconnect with your peace

  • Quiet the mental noise

  • Move through life with clarity and calm

When you’re grounded, you’re not just surviving, you’re present, powerful, and in position to truly heal.

Grounding Techniques I Swear By

Here are the simple, powerful, and sometimes funny ways I ground myself daily and weekly. These aren’t just tips, they’re lifelines that have changed everything for me.

1. Barefoot Time (The OG Grounding)

Yes, barefoot in the grass… but now with a new mindset. Walking barefoot outdoors helps reset your body’s electrical state and connect to the Earth’s natural energy. It calms anxiety, lifts your mood, and centers your spirit.

How I use it: I take barefoot walks in my yard or on natural ground, consciously trusting that healing outweighs the what-ifs. Lord help me! If I can’t get outside, I stand barefoot in my home and visualize energy flowing through me.

2. Breathing With Purpose

This one’s free, always available, and deeply effective. Intentional breath grounds the nervous system and pulls you back into the now. And trust andf believe that I am all about taking care of my nervous system.

How I use it: I practice “4-7-8” breathing (inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8) multiple times a day (in through the nose and out through the mouth.) It helps me shift out of overwhelm and into alignment.

3. The Tree Pose (aka “Let Me Be Still Before I Go Off”)

When life starts acting up and folks start testing my peace, I become a tree. Yep, a whole tree. Not a branch, not a leaf, the entire rooted, majestic, don't-mess-with-me oak.

Tree Pose is one of the grounding moves that help me stabilize both my mind and my mouth. It’s a physical reset that says, “You will not knock me off center today, not even a little bit.”

How I use it: Ideally, I do this barefoot, slow-breathing, heart-centered, feeling all zen and connected to the Earth… but listen. I work in heels and be a little cute, and I'm quite busy, so I don’t always have time to channel my inner yogi goddess in the middle of the day.

So if I can’t take my shoes off (because let’s be honest, imagine me kicking off my shoes mid-session like “Hold on, let me ground myself” ), I simply find the nearest wall, lean my back against it, plant my feet firmly, close my eyes, press my palms together, and breathe like my life depends on it. Because sometimes it does.

The truth is, you might still catch me quietly stepping out of a meeting or taking a moment to myself just to ground, because honestly, staying grounded, centered, and aligned is something I deeply prioritize. Especially with the kind of work I do, it’s not just a practice, it’s a necessity.

4. The “Don’t Talk to Me I’m Grounding” Ritual (aka My Sacred Stillness)

Listen… sometimes I don’t need to move. I don’t need to stretch. I don’t need a whole yoga or Tai Chi session. I need silence, stillness, and a few whiffs of Eucalyptus or Lavendar to keep me from snatching energy out here. This is what I call my sacred grounding ritual.

No candles. No full altar setup. Just me, my breath, my oils, and a moment.

How I use it: I keep essential oils with me at all times like they’re holy water lol!. I’m serious. I’ll pull one out mid-day, take a long intentional whiff like I’m sipping peace through my nostrils, close my eyes, and just breathe. Sometimes peppermint, sometimes grounding blends, whatever my nervous system needs in that moment.

And if I’m in a place where I can sit still for a few minutes, I’ll add sound. I use binaural beats, rife frequencies, sometimes deep chants, or I’ll just hum softly. Humming is a whole vibration, it literally brings me back into my body. There’s something about the sound resonating through my chest that says, “You are here. Be here. Stay here.”

This little stillness pocket? It’s everything. It keeps me from floating into overwhelm, reacting emotionally, or being spiritually off-center while smiling in people’s faces (which is something that I love to do and it is apart fo my spiritual practice that keeps me vibrating at a frequency that is healthy for me.)

This is the moment I choose the healthiest version of myself again. Every time.

5. Creating Space for My Thoughts

There’s something sacred about a fresh piece of paper. It’s like an old friend who is always there, always listening, never judging. I have a deep relationship with blank pages; they hold space for my sometimes messy thoughts, my revelations, my healing, and all the little things I’m still figuring out. When I sit down to write, it's not just journaling, it’s a whole ritual. A conversation with my inner self. Pen to paper is how I untangle the noise in my mind and come home to myself.

And if I’m not writing? I’m talking to myself. Literally. I record video journals on my phone like it’s a confessional booth and a therapist’s office rolled into one. No audience. No filter. Just me, capturing my thoughts in real-time, because sometimes my truth flows easier when I speak it out loud. Honestly, my phone stays yelling at me: “Storage full. Please delete some files.” And I’m like, “Sis, I’m just trying to heal!”

I’ve got a whole archive of private vlogs, mini soul sessions, documenting the highs, the lows, and everything in between. I don’t do it for content. I do it for clarity. For peace. For processing. Whether it's ink on paper or video on a screen, the point is the same: to make space for my truth and give it somewhere to land.

Grounding doesn’t always look like stillness. Sometimes, it looks like talking to your phone at 2 AM or filling yet another notebook with scribbles and soul-searching. Either way, it’s sacred. It’s self-care. It’s medicine.

How I Use It:

I keep a journal nearby at all times, on my nightstand, in my purse or briefcase, sometimes even in the car. I write when my thoughts feel heavy, when my spirit feels loud, when I get a download coming in hot, or when I just need to make space for myself. When writing isn’t flowing, I pull out my phone, hit record, and talk freely, no script, no pressure. These moments are just for me. I don’t rewatch them often, but I always feel lighter afterward. It’s about release, not performance.

6. Weekly Nature Bathing

Let’s be real, I’m not the “let’s go deep into the forest and build a shelter” kind of girl. You will not catch me foraging or hugging trees for hours (no shade if that’s your thing, I don't like bugs). But what I am here for is a slow walk by the water, pausing to breathe in the fresh air, watching how the light hits the trees, and just being with the Earth. That’s my kind of grounding. They call it “forest bathing,” but to me, it’s more like nature therapy, without the co-pay. It’s the intentional act of stepping outside, leaving the noise behind, and letting the elements hold you for a while. No podcasts. No to-do lists. Just presence.

I’ve learned that getting out into the fresh air helps me reconnect, not just with the world around me, but with the calm that already lives within me. Because sometimes, being outside can feel overstimulating, too much energy, too many distractions, but when I go out with intention, when I slow down, breathe, and let nature meet me where I am, I find that it doesn’t overshadow my peace… it supports it.

I don’t need a whole forest. Give me a body of water, a quiet path, a few trees swaying in the wind, and that’s enough. That’s medicine.

How I Use It:

Once a week, I take time to step outside, intentionally. I leave my phone on silent (or at home if I’m feeling brave), and I walk near water or somewhere green. I don’t go far or fast. I just observe. I breathe with the trees, listen to the wind, enjoy the birds singing, and let my nervous system take a break. It doesn’t need to be dramatic or deep. It just needs to be consistent. Nature always meets me exactly where I am.

7. Dressing in Divine Armor (Yes, What I Wear Grounds Me Too)

This one right here? A whole word. Let me tell you something, what I wear and the scents I choose to put on myself have become one of the most powerful grounding rituals in my life. And no, I’m not being dramatic. I mean this with my whole healed chest. Every single day, before I get dressed, I pray and ask: "What do I need to carry in my energy today? What colors, what fabrics, what scent is in alignment with my spirit’s assignment?" For real.

Because here’s the truth: I don’t just get dressed, I suit up. It’s not about being cute (even though I am), it’s about being centered. It’s not about following trends, it’s about being tuned in. Some days, I’m led to wear a combination of colors that may not seem they go together, but my confirmaton that they do, comes directly from Spirit, because it helps me feel still, clean, and focused. Other days it’s something bold and vibrant to open my energy or shift the atmosphere. And the scents? Whew. Don’t play with me, I really enjoy this selection process.

Sometimes when I'm shopping for clothes and perfumes and oils, it's almost like I'm choosing sacred tools and armor, and they are. Then if I'm feeling led to create something special for that day, I'm in my tool chest of essential oils and I go to making some great, like a mad scientist (Frankincense, sandalwood, vetiver, rose, peppermint, patchouli... whatever my spirit says that day, I listen. I’ll take a deep whiff of one before a session, a conversation, or even just before running errands. Sometimes I layer them with a soft perfume that makes me feel enveloped in love and protection. Other times, it’s all oils, pure and intentional.

This practice of getting dressed and adorned from a spirit-led place has literally changed my life. It grounds me before the world ever gets a piece of me. It keeps me aligned when everything else is loud. It’s sacred. It’s grounding. It’s mine.

Stay tuned for the full Healing Knowte I’ll be writing about this soon—but for now, know this: Getting dressed with intention is one of the most underrated spiritual practices of all time.

How I Do This:

  • I sit in stillness before I get dressed. I ask God, “What do I need to wear today?” I listen. I sense. I wait for the nudge.

  • I let colors speak to me. Sometimes I’m drawn to grounding neutrals like beige, brown, olive. Other days, it’s copper, ivory, or something bold. It’s never random.

  • I choose textures and fabrics based on energy. Soft, flowy fabrics when I need ease. Structured pieces when I need to feel strong.

  • I intuitively pick my scent. I open my oils or perfumes, take a slow breath, and pay attention to what makes my body say, “That’s the one.”

  • I treat the process like a sacred ritual. I don’t rush it. I allow myself to adorn, not just get dressed.

Sometimes the very act of putting on a certain necklace, a particular pair of earrings, or even wrapping myself in a certain scarf is what grounds me deeper into who I am that day. This isn’t vanity. This is vibrational alignment. It’s how I show up in the world clothed in clarity.

The Healing Shift

Grounding isn’t about getting it perfect, it’s about getting present. It’s not some elite spiritual practice reserved for people who live in linen or do yoga at sunrise (although, bless them too). Grounding is about learning how to meet yourself—honestly, fully, and without judgment—in the exact moment you’re in.

Sometimes that looks like standing barefoot in the grass, soaking in the sun like a houseplant with bills. Other times? It’s sitting in your car, deep breathing before a meeting you really don’t want to be at, trying not to cuss anybody out. (Growth!)

The truth is, once I stopped resisting the practice, once I stopped thinking grounding had to look or feel a certain way, I found myself landing in my body in a way I never had before. I stopped floating. I stopped spiraling. I stopped feeling like I was everywhere and nowhere all at once.

Instead, I came back home to myself.

And that, right there, is the shift. The healing shift. It’s not flashy. It’s not always Instagrammable. But it’s real. It’s the slow, sacred act of choosing to return, again and again, to the present moment. To your breath. To your body. To your truth.

Grounding is a practice of self-remembering. And every time you choose to come back to yourself, you’re not failing, you’re healing.

Healing Notes for Your Soul

Grounding doesn’t have to look a certain way. It just has to feel like home to your nervous system. Do what works for you. Make it sacred. Make it yours. Your healing is unfolding—one rooted, intentional step at a time.

With grounding grace and light,
